Coping with bedwetting: my story

A video for the DryNites Confident Kids 24/7 campaign.

Back in June I was invited to share my experiences of coping with night-time toilet training and the bedwetting stage of childhood.

But that wasn’t all. I would be interviewed. And filmed. And the video would be put onto a website – the DryNites website no less – for potentially millions of people to see!

As you know, I’ve been working with DryNites on their Confident Kids 24/7 campaign and this video is the latest stage of that initiative.

I was a little daunted at the idea of doing an ‘on-camera’ interview first of all – being a former journalist, I’m more used to being the one behind the lens asking the questions – but I decided to go for it. It felt a little strange at first, but I soon got used to it and it was actually fun.

And now the video is finished and up on their website!

Bedwetting is a normal part of growing up and affects almost 600,000 children in the UK every year. If my video can help just one other parent handle this stage of childhood with calm and confidence then I’ll be happy.

You can watch me talking about our bedtime routines when we’re at home and away, how I cope with bedwetting, my experience with DryNites and my advice to other parents.

I honestly think that staying confident in your own parenting style and ignoring the well-intentioned, but often unwelcome comments from others is important in keeping children at ease.

It’s important that your child feels confident to help them overcome the bedwetting phase and I think that parents’ behaviour can have an impact. I also find that DryNites pyjama pants are fantastic for the night-time toilet training stage because they offer discreet, age-appropriate protection for your child to help them feel as grown-up at night as they do during the day.

DryNites, pyjama pants, bedwetting, Confident Kids 24/7Other mums have also recorded videos of how they cope, or have coped, with the bedwetting stage of childhood. These are all available to watch on the DryNites website.

I think videos like these are so useful. There are so many bedwetting myths out there that it’s good to hear other parents talking about what worked and didn’t work for them.

On the subject of bedwetting myths, DryNites and kids coach, Naomi Richards have created a handy infographic to shatter those misconceptions and provide some handy nuggets of advice.

DryNites is working with celebrity mum Denise van Outen and Naomi Richards as part of their Confident Kids 24/7 campaign to help parents inspire confidence in their children both day and night.

The DryNites campaign aims to provide parents with helpful tools and advice to boost their child’s confidence and overcome challenges such as bedwetting. You can visit www.drynites.co.uk to find out more.

As I have mentioned, I am working with DryNites to support their Confident Kids 24/7 campaign. Although I am receiving financial compensation for my time, I’m pleased to be helping to raise awareness. It’s important that your child feels confident to help them overcome the bedwetting phase, which is such a major developmental milestone.
