Flexing my home-working muscles…

Back in October last year, I decided enough was enough and submitted a flexible working application. I was finding it tough to work full-time (37.5 hours each week) in an office located over an hour away from my home. It was hard on me and hard on my children.

My boss understood how I was feeling and had been allowing me to work flexibly – working from home one day each week – but, as she was preparing to leave the company, we were both keen to get this arrangement formally confirmed. At the time, it was decided that my application should be delayed until my new boss was appointed and in post. I carried on in my informal capacity, unsure if it would continue and worried about how I’d cope if it didn’t.

After a few delays and some months, I finally submitted another flexible working application in July this year. My new boss and I met to discuss things and agreed on a compromise. I had wanted 2 days working from home, but we settled on one. The paperwork has now finally gone through, so I can officially say that I have a flexible working arrangement! Whoop Whoop!

I can’t describe how relieved I am to have this formally confirmed. Working from home one day a week doesn’t sound like much, but it really does make a difference. It’s one day every week that I can do the school run, help my mother-in-law if she needs me and work hard, away from office distractions. I don’t need to rush from one place to the next, or rush the children into bed. We can all take things just that little bit easier, that little bit slower.

So here’s to my working from home ‘triumph’. Right now it’s one of the best feelings in the world!

    I’m currently looking to return to work but don’t want to do full time and not many employers are that flexible x

    1. Thanks, I’m so pleased that, although it took a while, things did work out in the end. It does surprise me though that some companies aren’t willing to be flexible. They don’t seem to be able to think any differently from the traditional 9am-5pm Monday to Friday role and that’s a real shame. I hope it works out for you
