Homemade strawberry and chocolate jam
A dual-flavoured jam perfect for summer.
Before I had children I was what you might call a ‘neat freak’.
I liked a tidy home with everything in its place. I thought nothing of giving our home a thorough clean once a week.
But since having Olivia and William – and to an extent, Dave and Bella as well – I’ve learnt to lighten up and embrace the inevitable mess. Let’s face it, the muckier young children get, the happier they generally are, right?
This month I did something with my children that I would previously have shuddered at – we made jam! And not just any old jam, strawberry and chocolate jam! Made to my very own recipe.
This should make enough to fill one 17oz jar.
What you will need
- 300g strawberries
- 300g granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp of lemon juice
- 50g milk chocolate buttons
You will also need to make sure that your jar and lid have been sterilised before use.
What you will need to do
Hull and chop the strawberries into quarters.
Place into a saucepan with the sugar and lemon juice and gently heat (and stir) until the sugar has dissolved.
Once the sugar has dissolved turn up the heat and boil until the temperature reaches ten6 degrees.
Once the mixture reaches the desired temperature, remove from the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
While the strawberry jam is cooling, crush the chocolate buttons.
Stir the crushed chocolate into the strawberry mixture. The chocolate should melt into the mixture.
Ladle into a jar. If you want your jam to be seedless, strain the mixture through a muslin cloth and allow it to drip into the jar.
Seal the jar with the lid and leave the jam to cool. Store in a cool dry place for at least a week before opening.
Yes, it was messy, but we had so much fun making the jam. And we couldn’t wait to spread the jam onto some bread and try it out.
You can taste the chocolate in the jam, but it’s not overwhelming. It complements the strawberries nicely as you’d expect, but doesn’t make the jam sickly.
Big thanks to Persil who kindly sent me a pack of jam-making essentials and challenged me to make some dual-flavoured jam. They also sent me a pack of their Dual Action Capsules to get our aprons, muslins and clothes clean again. As the name suggests, the capsules have a dual action cleaning system and they really worked in getting everything sparkling clean.
