Fun things to do

My night with the Impractical Jokers!

A fun night out with The Tenderloins on tour

It’s not often I have an adult-only night out (thanks kids), but when I do I like to make them count. And last Friday definitely counted.

I bet you’re wondering what kind of post this is going be. It’s not actually as scandalous as the headline might suggest (yeah, sorry about that).

With my husband’s 40th birthday not too far around the corner, I wanted to treat him to something special. So I arranged the necessary childcare and organised a night out for us at The O2 arena.

Why the O2? Because that’s where the Impractical Jokers Where’s Larry tour had landed for one night only.

Who are the Impractical Jokers?

If you don’t know who the Impractical Jokers are, they are 4 American guys – Joe Gatto, James ‘Murr’ Murray, Sal Vulcano and Brian ‘Q’ Quinn – who have their own hidden camera prank show on TV. It runs on TruTV in the U.S and on Comedy Central in the UK. Collectively, they’re known as The Tenderloins, an improvisational comedy troupe.

The show itself, Impractical Jokers, is all about the funny dares that they make to each other do in public. At the end of each episode there will be at least one loser who then has to do a punishment (a dare they cannot refuse to carry out).

Their show is one of my husband’s favourites. In fact, it’s a family favourite. We all have our own preferred Joker: I like Q, my daughter thinks Joe is the silliest guy on earth, my son enjoys watching Murr and my husband thinks Sal is the funniest member.

When I heard that The Tenderloins were coming to the UK with their Impractical Jokers Where’s Larry tour, I knew I needed to get some tickets. I was lucky enough to book seats a handful of rows away from the stage – result!

U.S comedian, Steve Byrne, was a great warm-up act to the main show. At one point, when he was pulling random audience members onto stage to form a new boy band, my husband narrowly missed being picked! Steve even got the entire arena singing along to ‘Mister Brightside’ at the end. Even the Jokers couldn’t resist bouncing onto the stage to join in.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the main show. After all, how do you translate a hidden camera prank show to a stage?

The answer is, in this case, relatively easily.

One of the most endearing things about the guys is that they’re genuine friends and have been for the past 25 years or so. It means their TV show is littered with inside jokes and genuine laughs. The Impractical Jokers Where’s Larry show follows that formula, mixing jokes with funny stories and video snippets of off-screen pranks.

Of course, being the Impractical Jokers that they are, they couldn’t resist pulling one live prank.

Running into the audience, Murr picked out a woman two rows behind me to give him her phone. He then randomly selected someone from her phone book (her dad!) and sent a text saying “I tested positive”. When no reply came, Joe decided to send an even more outrageous message: a picture of his bum!

At times the show felt quite scripted, but overall it was a lot of fun. It was great to be out with just my husband and I can’t remember laughing so much in ages.

The only problem? We didn’t find Larry!
